| Why this course? |
This course will help you to draft and
write confidently and effectively
in English. You will develop your skills in
drafting clearly, simply and accurately,
whatever the governing law. You will also
learn how to use (or avoid using) terms that
have a specific meaning under English law.
And you will take with you a set of
guidelines for reference in the office.

| What does the course cover? |

Guidelines for drafting
clearly, simply and accurately,
including:
- structuring clauses, paragraphs and
sentences
- review of relevant grammar, including
syntax
- use of provisos and exceptions (eg,
"provided that" and
"notwithstanding"
- replacing archaisms and legal jargon
- understanding and using "shall",
"will", "must" and "may"
- clearing verbal clutter
- avoiding ambiguity
- understanding traditional legal
terminology

Background to structure of contracts
and review of common clauses

Negotiation of contract terms OR introduction
to letter writing
- Comparison of US and British style and

- Exercise throughout including:
- restructuring and redrafting poorly

to an advanced level of English but who have
no lower than an intermediate level.

Stella Styllis - LLB (Hons) (Exon),
Solicitor (now non-practising),
University of Cambridge CELTA
Stella practised as a solicitor for
over 20 years, both in-house and in
private practice, before devoting
her time fully to training. She has
held senior legal positions with the
Cyprus Development Bank, Amoco U.K.
Limited and (for 10 years) the Rank
Group (a multinational leisure group
and global owner of the Hard Rock
Cafe). She has also run her own
private practice.
Stella has personally trained
lawyers from all over the world:
from major international law firms,
industry and the judiciary. |

Alan Simmons - LLB (Hons
in Law and French), LLM
(International
Human Rights), RSA CTEFLA
Alan trained as a solicitor
at Linklaters & Paines. He
later practised as a
commercial solicitor at the
firms of
Merriman
White and Izod Evans,
advising on (among other
things) Company, Commercial,
Construction, Employment and
Intellectual Property Law.
After then gaining his LLM,
he
trained
lawyers and judges in
Central and Eastern Europe
on the European Convention
on Human Rights.
Alan has been
engaged
for many
years
in delivering legal English
skills
and language training to
lawyers worldwide. |
